How to perform combination TV and SVC for measurement of IRV, ERV, IC and EC parameters?
Solution
The patient or subject is breathing with his/her relaxed breathing rate and frequency through SpiroSafe flow transducer.
Select
'TV'
button in the left lower side of the window. After a while the numerical results for the following three variables are written to the table in the right side of the window.
TV
= tidal volume
FR
= breathing frequency
MV
= minute ventilation
VC
= vital capacity
IRV
=inspiratory reserve volume
ERV
=expiratory reserve volume
IC
=inspiratory capacity
EC
=expiratory capacity
The numeric results are updated after each breathing cycle. The results are average values calculated from three last breathing cycles.
During the measurement, one should monitor traffic light on
SVC
button. The colour of the traffic light is green if tidal breathing is reproducible and stable. If it is not, the traffic light colour is red.
When the light is green, slow vital capacity measurement (SVC) can be started by clicking its button. It is recommended to move on to
SVC
only when the light is green. Technically it is also possible when the traffic light colour is red.
Select
'SVC'
button in the left lower side of the window and ask the patient to expire fully and then to inspire fully. After a while the numerical result of
SVC
is written to the table in the right side of the window.
The measurement is automatically stopped at 60 s or can be interrupted by pressing the
'STOP'
button.
If a measurement has been stopped either at 60 s or has been interrupted before 60 s by pressing
'STOP'
button, the software is asking:
'Do you accept this measurement?'
Only either
'Yes'
(accepted) or
'No'
(not accepted) is valid as a response to the question. If the answer is
'YES'
for acceptance of the measurement the corresponding test is saved as one of the eight measurements of the patient in either phase (either Pre phase or Post phase). The software returns back to the measurement window, where selection for e.g. a new measurement can be activated. In case, where the answer is
'NO'
for not accepting the measurement, the software returns back to the measurement window without saving the measurement.
1. Place the flow transducer in the patient's mouth. The patient should breathe in a relaxed/normal rate and frequency through the flow transducer.
2. Start the measurement by selecting the TV button. Monitor the traffic light colour on the SVC button. Select SVC button when the colour is green.
3. The patient expires slowly until red color in the flow indicator disappears.
4. The patient inspires slowly and long.
5. The patient returns to normal relaxed breathing.
6. Finish the measurement by selecting the STOP button.
7. Remove the flow transducer from the patient's mouth.
